Solstice / Wintersonnenwende

Today is solstice and I'm very happy about it :-)
Can't wait that the days are getting longer again.

Heute ist Wintersonnenwende und ich freu mich sehr darüber. Ich kann's kaum erwarten, dass die Tage wieder länger werden.

I think I haven't shown the tree block of the Random Sampler QAL, I think I'll take it apart to correct the wonkiness. But that will have to wait.

Ich denke, ich habe den Baum-Block vom Random Sampler QAL noch nicht gezeigt, ich will ihn auch noch einmal auseinandernehmen, um die Unschärfen etwas zu korrigieren ;-) Aber das muss noch etwas warten.

And here are the next blocks
Und hier die nächsten Blöcke
and finally ( after having started it went quite quickly ) I made myself much needed needlecases after the this tutorial
and schließlich habe ich für mich noch dringend benötigte Nadelmäppchen nach diesem tutorial gemacht,  (nachdem ich erst mal angefangen hatte, ging es ganz schnell )

So merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
So, Fröhliche Weihnachten und ein Glückliches Neues Jahr

P.S. I decided to try to post in German too, you might have noticed ;-)

Starry Starry Night

One of my 2 quilting WIPs is now finished and already in good use. It's quite cold here .

The stars are the result of several swaps in R.C.T.Q , which was a lot of fun . And I really love all the different types of stars and fabrics.

For the sashing and border I used leftovers, so there are several shades of blue and black in there.

The stars are surrounded by simple meandering, but in the border are swirls as a kind of reference to the painting 'Starry starry night' by Vincent van Gogh. The name of the swap was 'Starry starry night' too :-)
And it reminds me of the wonderful song by Don McLean with the same name.
All the stars are quilted in the ditch by hand.

Here are the names of the quilters who contributed to this:

Johanna Koski, finland
Janet Nelson, Florida, USA
Karen, Queen of Squishies USA
Kay Ahr, Nevada USA
Mary Dorchak, Oregon USA
Sally Swindells, Suffolk UK
Lizzy Taylor, UK
Alison McDonald, Ontario, Canada
Jessamy Thompson, Netherlands
Jennifer Kinney, Washington USA
Kate Dicey, Kent, UK
Cappy Phillips, MD, USA
Ursula Urban, Vienna, Austria
Roberta in Munich, Germany
Mary O_Neill, Arizona, USA
Denny Zech, Indiana, USA

and me ;-)

Placemats again

As our next Ikea store is an hour drive away, which is quite far for Germans ;-), I don't manage to get there very often. A few weeks ago, we managed and they had a fun Santa Claus fabric. Which ended  in another set of placemats. They will stay here and already got their first stains...

Sorry for the bad photo, nearly all November was so dark and when we have sun, it's difficult to photograph.
And then of course we needed matching pillows. Stephanie might recognize the polka dot fabric , it waited until now for its special appearance :-)

Another finish: 'Music', the top is done , I even have the backing ready, but it will have to wait a while, before I can baste and quilt this one.

And I played a bit with my friends

Quilting program interrupted

for some placemats ! Ok, a little quilting was involved there, too ;-)

They will travel to Virginia, so I had to finish them early enough for their long journey. Hopefully they arrive on time for Christmas.

And I managed to sew the 3rd block of Anita's Random Sampler QAL, I really like this block.

Quilting and quilting

So I'm still handquilting the stars of Starry Starry night, but there are only a few left, a few letters and a few sashing squares have to be quilted too, but the end is in sight :-)

Here's a close up of  some stars

Then I basted 'Herbst' and started machine quilting it. Herbst means fall and and the season is perfect for quilting fall ;-)

In the middle of the blocks I'm quilting a sort of petal pattern and this was my first try for the background fabric:

It took me only 3 blocks until I realized, that I didn't like it ;-)

Then I tried this ...

Much better, I think . But unpicking the already quilted areas is a pain, because the thread is very fine and I have spots where I quilted continuously, so I have to unpick to a certain point and then I have to bury the nearly broken thread :-(  But it's nearly done  now .

Another photo

So I'm hand- and machine quilting nearly simultaneously ;-)

Blogger's Quilt Festival

Hi there ,

Blogger's Quilt Festival was one of the reasons I started blogging. It's such fun to participate and see all the other quilts, too.

I started to write a post about my starry starry night quilt, then I read, only finished quilts should be entered soooo..

here's   'Easy'
Blogger's Quilt Festival Stats
Name - Easy
Finished Size  - 31 x 31"   or 80 x 80 xm
Machine Pieced and Machine Quilted by - me

It's paper pieced using templates from Karen Stone's book 'Quilts' and all went together smooth and so it's name was Easy :-)

It's living in our kitchen and so I had to piece some matching pillows , here's one of them.

So, Amy thank you again, for hosting this, I can only imagine how much work this is !

Finished preemie's

Both preemiequilts are finished and will be shipped tomorrow, together with a third one, which I already finished in spring. This is the second one with a wonderful flannel backing.

I've made the last 2 blocks of Blogger's BOM and when counting my blocks  realized that I must have left out one month. So now I have only 24 blocks, which is fine to me, because it's easier to make a setting.

I think these are my favourite ones :-)

Carol got her verb :

and Tonya blogged about the blocks she received :-)

and I'm still hand quilting stars ....

Preemie quilts and new QAL

As there is no finish in sight, I had to start something new, so I can finish something ( this makes sense, no ? ).
I started 2 preemie quilts, the first one is nearly done, the second one awaits quilting.

The AAQI quilts are on their way, as is a verb for Carol   .

The August blocks for Blogger's BOM are made:

And I will play along with Anita's QAL

Oh, and I've been at the European Patchwork Meeting in France, where they did not only show wonderful quilts but also sold some fabrics ;-)

AAQI Quilts

2 new AAQI Quilts are registrated, now I'm waiting for the info, so I can ship them.

I'm finished with the swirls on my 'starry starry night' quilt and the binding is nearly done. BUT... I decided to handquilt all the stars and letters, so it will take a while until this one is finished.

Friends, again

Last week a lovely parcel from Rachael arrived and to my biggest surprise not only one house block showed up, but three !!!

She included a lot of  dragonflies, because the name of my blog means dragonfly quilts. And of course there are daisy's too :-)) Again, thank you so much, Rachael.
AND... she included purple fabrics too, because I lamented about my purple stash :-)

Me, I'm occupied with swirling....

Friends

After a few days on the wall I simply had to correct the position of the arms of the tall girl, so now it looks like this

A few more days later, I couldn't stand that she looked so lonely, so this happened :

Now here they are :

Somehow this looks like the start of a new quilt  ( big sigh )

Summer

Though the weather hasn't been acting much like summer... until yesterday... we had a lot of summer activities like a short trip to another country. We've been to Milan, Italy and made a stop at the Lago Maggiore on our way back .
Last weekend we've visited a castle in our region, other weekends were spent in winerys, tasting wine ;-)

So no big finishes here, sewing wise.
Just 2 blocks ( I changed the setting of the triangles in the first block, because this way it fitted better to my fabric choices and I was too lazy to resew the units )

and another little AAQI quilt. It's crooked... I hope they accept crooked ones....
